Technologies

You can usually buy two distinct types of headphones, dynamic or electrostatic. Let’s discuss the pros and cons of each style below.

Dynamic

Headphones crafted in a dynamic driver style are similar to speakers that use dynamic driver technology. This technology is the most popular, especially among speaker manufacturer. This technology uses cones or diaphragms attached to a coil of wire to help spread sound.

The cone and coil moves up and down in response to electrical energy produced by an amplifier and a reaction with magnetic fields. The voice coil moves quickly enough to result in ripples in the surround air pressure. When the air is displaced, speakers create sound.

Electrostatic

Speakers using electrostatic technology are much the same as electrostatic headphones. In this headphone or speaker, electrical energy produced from the amplifier works with surrounding fields of energy to move a diaphragm. The diaphragm in electrostatic models is crafted of a thin sheet of substance called Mylar. This Mylar product also moves air and displaces it, resulting in air pressure changes, and finally sound.

Unlike dynamic headphones, electrostatic ones offer high-end sound with little distortion. They aren’t popular however because they are expensive. Even basic electrostatic models run upward of $1000 or more. Most people don’t use their headphones enough for this to be a benefit. The world’s most famous set of electrostatic headphones cost almost $15,000. How’s that for a chunk of change? Of course, they do come with perks including a tube amp and a converter that changes digital to analog signals. This is why they are so expensive.

Dynamic headphones are usually less expensive, though they can cost a bit if they come as part of a sound system. Dynamic systems often come with headphones attached to a dedicated amplifier. This can usually cost thousands. Fortunately you can usually get similar equipment inexpensively.

Below we’ll talk more about the different types of headphones available on the market. You can use these tips to help you buy a set of headphones that meet your personal needs.
